Healy Mac’s (Irish Bar & Restaurant) Review

Ribs and beerproof that life couldn’t get any better at Healy Mac’s.

The choices along Changkat Bukit Bintang could be too much for a first-time visitor, and without Google’s precious advice, we found ourselves a little lost in its cosmopolitan jungle. We went through the stretch of bars and restaurants opposite the shopping block, to gauge which bar or restaurant would draw us; “giving up” simply isn’t on the vocabulary of even the pickiest of eaters.

We kept walking until we found this jovial bar near the end of the road: The crowd is not too rambunctious like the others, but just spirited enough for our noise-averse ear drums. We don’t like boring, but we don’t like attention-starved either.

Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant attracts diners who are relaxed, but knows how to have good, clean fun. Yes, it’s a drinking spot (it’s a sports bar for crying out loud), and one that has kept its good reputation intact for over a century. It exudes a family-friendly vibe: from the mahogany furnishings to the overall neighborhood pub theme, it certainly feels like you’re right at home, perhaps even better.

At the entrance, we’re immediately sold with just one look at the menu. Healy Mac’s offers diners a wide range of dining options, from comfort fare to steak dinners. The menu is extensive and features fish, beef, pork, and vegetable-based ala carte dishes, so there’s one for every one. Main courses set diners back anywhere between RM 70 and RM 150 (with drinks).

The food is hearty and fuss-free, as in mixed sausage platters, grilled salmon, fish & chips, and your typical chicken roasts. We assumed the crowd favourite was the organic pork spare ribs – marinated tender pork spare ribs, accompanied by truffle oil mashed potato, sweet corn and drenched in Guinness-based BBQ sauce – which we didn’t hesitate to order. The serving is huge, even for our eager appetite.

Staff is very attentive and friendly: A Filipino member of the wait staff checked on us regularly to make sure our needs are taken care of. She also joined us for a quick conversation, and booked a Grab ride for us.

It makes so much sense why Healy Mac’s have won the hearts of its customers: it gives diners many reasons to come back.
